Laver Cup 2025: Holger Rune and Joao Fonseca Debut

Holger Rune and Joao Fonseca are set to make their debut at the prestigious Laver Cup this year, scheduled to take place in San Francisco from September 19-21, 2025. This thrilling three-day event will showcase top-tier tennis at the Chase Center, the home of the Golden State Warriors, and fans are eagerly anticipating the competition.

Excitement from Both Players

Danish player Holger Rune will represent Team Europe, joining notable teammates Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz. Meanwhile, Fonseca will join Team World, which features rising stars like Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Ben Shelton. Rune expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m thrilled to be chosen for Team Europe in San Francisco. I almost played in the Laver Cup a few years back but had to pull out due to an injury. Now that I have this opportunity, I’m ready and can’t wait for the competition and to explore San Francisco for the first time. I’ve heard from other players that the Laver Cup is one of the most fun events of the year, and I’m eager to be a part of it.”

Currently ranked No. 10 in the ATP rankings, Rune has achieved five tour-level titles and reached the quarter-finals in three Grand Slam tournaments. He recently triumphed over Alcaraz to win the Barcelona ATP 500. Initially set to debut in Vancouver in 2023, Rune had to withdraw due to a back injury, making this upcoming event even more special for him.

Team Europe will be captained by Yannik Noah, who praised Rune’s competitive spirit and match experience, saying, “Holger is a fierce competitor and will be an excellent addition to our team.”

On the other hand, 18-year-old Joao Fonseca is rapidly making a name for himself in the tennis world. As the reigning champion of the Next Gen ATP Finals, he became junior No. 1 in 2023 and broke into the Top 100 of the ATP rankings just 16 months later. He made headlines by defeating World No. 9 Andrey Rublev in the first round of the Australian Open and won his first ATP Tour title in Buenos Aires earlier this year.

Fonseca shared his excitement about being selected for Team World, stating, “I’ve been watching the Laver Cup since I was a child and dreamed of playing. It’s incredible to be alongside players like Fritz, Paul, and Shelton, and to be coached by Andre Agassi. I will give my all!” Agassi, also making his debut as Team World’s captain, expressed his enthusiasm for having Fonseca on board, saying, “Joao is the kind of young talent that makes Laver Cup so special. His fearless and energetic style of play will shine on this big stage.”

Now in its eighth edition, the Laver Cup pits six of the best male tennis players from Europe against six from the rest of the world in a thrilling competition. The top three players from both regions, based on ATP rankings following Roland-Garros, will secure automatic invitations to participate.
