Jannik Sinner’s Historic Win Over Casper Ruud

Jannik Sinner’s incredible match against Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia will be remembered for a long time. Sinner, currently the top-ranked player in the PIF ATP Rankings, achieved a stunning 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ruud, who recently won the Mutua Madrid Open. This impressive win marks Sinner’s 11th consecutive match against Top 10 players without dropping a single set.

Breaking Records and Setting New Standards

Notably, Sinner has won 24 straight sets against these high-ranking opponents, surpassing Bjorn Borg’s previous record of 23 sets from 1978. Now, Sinner is aiming to catch up to John McEnroe, who holds the record for the most consecutive sets won against Top 10 players with 28 sets during the 1984 season.

This match was remarkable as it was only the second time this century that a Top-10 player managed to win just a single game in a completed match. The last instance occurred 17 years ago when Mikhail Youzhny, then ranked World No. 19, defeated World No. 2 Rafael Nadal with an identical score of 6-0, 6-1.

According to Tennis Data Innovations, Sinner’s Performance Rating against Ruud was an impressive 9.62, the highest score recorded by any player since the 2024 season began. Sinner expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating, “It was an amazing match today from my side. Everything worked very, very well.”

Ruud entered the match with confidence after winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid. However, Sinner’s exceptional play resulted in Ruud having one of the worst serving days of his career. In fact, Ruud won only 32 percent of his service points (14 out of 44) against Sinner at the Foro Italico, with just 19 percent success on his second serve.

Despite this incredible display, Sinner knows he must remain focused as he prepares for his next challenge. He will face the 11th seed, Tommy Paul, in the semi-finals. Sinner acknowledged the importance of staying grounded, saying, “It was a great performance. Very happy about that. But things can change quickly. Every day is different. Tomorrow is a different opponent.”

With this victory, Sinner not only solidifies his position at the top of the rankings but also sends a strong message to his competitors about his current form and capability on the court.
