Nigeria’s Odafe Benedict Efemuai triumphed at the FIDE World Amateur Blitz Chess Championship in Abuja, clinching the U2300 Open title. Meanwhile, players from India showcased their skills with impressive victories in both the U1700 Open and U2000 Open categories.
Highlights of the FIDE World Amateur Blitz Chess Championship
The Blitz Championship took place from August 6 to 7 as part of the FIDE World Amateur Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships. This event was a collaborative effort between FIDE and the Nigeria Chess Federation. Competitors played 11 rounds under a 3+2 time control system, with medals awarded in six different categories.
Efemuai stood out during the tournament, amassing 8 points over 11 rounds, earning him the U2300 Open Champion title and the gold medal. His performance placed him third overall, trailing only India’s AIM Shejal Sahil Sanjay, who scored 9 points to become the overall champion, and CM Pankaj Sharma, who finished as the runner-up with 8½ points. The strength of Nigerian players was evident, as they occupied positions three through ten in the final standings.
The championship wrapped up with a lively closing ceremony attended by notable figures such as the Chairman of the National Sports Commission and the President of the Nigeria Chess Federation. The Chief Arbiter presented the official report of the event, after which medalists from all categories were honored.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks, celebrating five days of thrilling chess competition and the spirit of international camaraderie.
